It’s the first Friday of August and that means it’s our third installment of Freshie Friday! This week, we’d like to introduce you to PegAssist, formerly known as “Pending” (as in, she took too long to pick a name so we had her listed as “Pending” on our league roster). Peg actually joined our league two years ago, but took a hiatus until last April, when she made her triumphant return to Undead.
Since rejoining the league, she has quickly risen through the ranks from Infected to Bout Level. In fact, she’ll be hitting the track in her first bout with our Damned Skaters this coming Sunday! We know she doesn’t need it, but wish her luck anyway!
How did you first discover roller derby?
I was at a party talking to someone and she pointed out this girl that skated for the team in Turlock. We eventually started talking to her and grilled her about derby for an hour or more. I came home and looked up the local teams the next day. That’s how I found the Undead website and there was a recruitment event coming up! So I showed up to the recruitment night and bought my gear right then!
What is your favorite thing about roller derby?.
The roller skating. It’s so fun, and developing more and more skills each time I’m on them makes me happy.
Do you have a derby name? If yes, what is it and how did you come up with it?
I’m no longer Pending hahaha! I’m now PegAssist! I definitely credit Oxy [Toxin] and her long list of potentials! My family & friends called me Peg as a kid, and my dad called me Pegasus sometimes. And when I saw that it was also an awesome derby move I decided that was it!
What do your friends and family think of you playing roller derby?
I’m always surprised at how people respond, most love it and are excited to come watch. My mom thinks I’m going to hurt myself, this is not an unusual response from my mom if you know our relationship at all. But most of my close friends just think it’s some other crazy awesome and kind of far out thing I’ve gotten myself into.
What do you do in “real” life?
I’m a nurse.
What are your non-derby hobbies?
Paddleboarding, hiking, camping, running 5 or 10k’s that I plan to train for and then don’t quite get done. Trying new projects just to see if I can. I’m currently building an outdoor couch… me and boredom with internet knowledge can be quite the combination.
